Venice Travel Diary - Venedig Reisetagebuch

Ever since I learned about Venice, I wanted to see it. It seemed like the most romantic city, built in the mediterranean sea, full of tiny islands, churches and bridges. I want to visit all of Italy, but I longed for Venice the most. Last summer, I finally took the opportunity, to fulfil my dream and visit Venice.

Schon seit ich von Venedig das erste Mal gehört habe, wollte ich es sehen. Es klang nach der romantischsten Stadt, mitten im Mittelmeer, voller winziger Inseln, Kirchen und Brücken. Ich wollte unbedingt Italien besuchen, aber Venedig hat mich am meisten fasziniert.

About: Venice consists of parts on the continent and 118 islands. The tourism is focused on the islands of the venetian lagoon. The islands are separated by 177 canals and connected with 409 bridges. The most famous bridge is the Rialto bridge that leads over the Grand Canale. Until the mid 19^th century, it was the only bridge across the “Canal Grande”, but since then there have been built 3 more bridges across the Grand Canal. Other than by foot, you can move around Venice with a Gondola, although they are pretty expensive. You pay up to 70 Euros for a ride. If you want to move over the Grand Canale for less money, but still enjoy the feeling of a Gondola, you should try the Traghetti. Traghetti are Gondolas that cross the Grand Canale on 8 Points in Venice. The drive only takes 5 minutes and is about 2,50€. While you ride it, you can take great pictures of the buildings around you, and the Canale itself. You can find Vaporetti as well. You could call them water-buses. They are built very shallow, which is necessary to conserve the buildings in Venice

Allgemeines: Vendig besteht aus Festland-Teilen und 118 Inseln. Der Tourismus spielt sich hauptsächlich auf den Inseln der venezianischen Lagune ab. Die Inseln sind durch 177 brücken geteilt und werden durch 409 Brücken miteinander verbunden. Die berühmteste Brücke ist die Rialto Brücke die über den Canal Grande führt. Bis Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war sie die einzige Brücke über den Canal Grande., aber seit dem sind 3 drei weitere Brücken errichtet worden. Wenn man in Venedig nicht zu Fuß gehen möchte, kann man auch Gondel fahren, wobei eine Fahrt ziemlich teuer ist. Man bezahlt bis zu 70 Euro für eine Fahrt. Wenn man sich das Gondel-Feeling für weniger Geld erleben möchte, kann man die Thraghetti ausprobieren. Traghetti sind kleine Gondeln die den Canal Grande an acht Stellen in Venidig überqueren. Die Fahrt dauert nur circa fünf Minuten und kostet circa 2,50 Euro. Während man den Canal quert, kann man Spitzen Fotos der Gebäude und des Canal Grande machen. Es gibt auch Vaporetti, eine Art Wasser-Bus. Sie haben wenig Tiefgang uns schonen die Gebäude Venedigs.

When? I went with my boyfriend in August last year. We stayed for 2 nights and spent two and a half days.

Wann? Ich habe Venedig letzten August gemeinsam mit meinen Freund besucht. Wir haben zweieinhalb Tage und zwei Nächte in Venedig verbracht.

Where? We stayed at the Venice Star Hostel. You have to pick your room keys at a hotel about a five minute walk away from the hostel. The staff there was amazing. They gave us tips on Restaurants and what better not to do. They brought us to the hostel and showed us all the rooms. Breakfast was a free service, which was really nice.

Wo? Wir haben im Venice Star Hostel übernachtet. Man muss die Schlüssel in einem Hotel etwa fünf Minuten entfernt abholen. Die Angestellten dort waren sehr hilfsbereit. Sie haben uns Tipps zu restaurants gegeben und uns vor Touristenfallen gewarnt. Wir wurden zum Hoste gebracht und bekamen eine kleine Tour der für uns zur Verfügung stehenden Räume. Es gab auch kostenloses Frühstück.

Special Places/ Besondere Plätze:

My favourite spot in Venice was the church Santi Giovanni e Paolo, or short San Zanipolo. Our accommodation was just two corners from there and we spent our evenings in front of this beautiful church with delicious gelato from the shop across the place. You can go inside Zanipolo as well. The windows are amazing. 

Mein Lieblingsplatz in Venedig war die Kirche Santi Giovanni e Paolo, oder kurz San Zanipolo. Unsere Unterkunft war gleich um die Ecke und wir haben die Abende dort mit Eis aus der Gelateria davor verbracht. Man kann Zanipolo auch besichtigen. Die Glas-Fenster sind unglaublich.

You don´t want to miss the Doge´s Palace, which is really impressive and interesting. When you buy the ticket to go inside, you can visit a two other museums as well. The palace used to be the residence of the Doge of venice, and opended as a museum in 1932. Inside you can cross the famous bridge of sighs. It has it´s name from the prisoners, who saw the lagoon on their way to their prison chambers. When you take a look outside, you will definitely understand.

Man sollte sich auf keinen Fall den Dogenpalast entgehen lassen – er ist wirklich beeindruckend und interessant. Wenn man das Ticket für den Eintritt in den Dogenpalast kauft, kann man damit auch in zwei weitere Museen in Venedig. Der Palast war einst das Herrschaftszentrum des Dogen von Venedig und wurde 1932 als Museum geöffnet. Im inneren kann man die berühmte Seufzerbrücke queren. Sie hat Ihren Namen von den Gefangenen, die auf dem Weg zu Ihrer Zelle über die Brücke kommen und angesichts der Lagune Venedigs seufzen. Wenn man darüber geht und einen Blick wagt, wird man es verstehen.

The most renown building in Venice has to be Saint Marks Cathedral. It is one of the main attractions of the Piazza san Marco which houses the Doge´s Palace, Saint Marks Cathedral, saint Marks Campanile and an amazing view of the Lagoon. You have to wait in line to get inside Saint Marks Cathedral. You have to cover your bare skin, so it is practical to have a big light scarf and some kind of longsleeve shirt to cover you up, if you are wearing shorts. They give you a weird scratchy synthetic blanket if you are not covered, but it´s itchy, so you better bring your own. In most churches you have to cover, so you will get a lot of use out of it anyway.

Das wohl berühmteste Gebäude in Venedig ist wohl der Markusdom. Er ist eine der Hauptattraktionen am Markusplatz, auf dem man den Dogenpalast, den Markusdom, den Campanile von san Marco sowie einen wundervollen Blick auf die Lagune findet. Man muss in einer ziemlich langen Schlange auf den Einlass in den Dom warten. Man muss nackte Haut verhüllen, also sollte man einen großen leichten Schal und eine dünne Bluse oder ähnliches dabei haben, wenn man kurze Hosen trägt. Es gibt Leih-Tücher aus synthetischem Material, das allerdings sehr juckt, weshalb es besser ist selbst etwas dabei zu haben. Da man sich in den meisten Kirchen verhüllen muss, ist es allgemein sehr nützlich einen Schal dabei zu haben.

 Saint Marks Campanile would have been worth a visit as well, but the lines to go up the tower are very long. We invested our time in a cup of coffee instead. You can enjoy the flair of the Piazza san Marco while sipping coffee (that wasn´t that good unfortunately) if you are willing to invest more money than usual. The restaurants at the Piazza san Marco are really traditional and unfortunately very expensive. You can listen to some live music and watch the pigeons flying over all the other tourists. I really enjoyed the experience.

Der Campanile von San Marco hätte sicher einen wundervollen Ausblicke geboten, allerdings war uns die Schlange etwas zu lang. Wir haben unsere Zeit lieber in eine Tasse Kaffee investiert. Man kann das Flair des Markusplatzes spüren, wenn man bereit ist in einem der Kaffeehäuser rundum etwas mehr für einen Kaffee zu bezahlen (leider war der Kaffee nicht so gut). Die Restaurants und Kaffeehäuser sind sehr traditionell und daher auch leider sehr teuer. Dafür kann man Live-Musik zuhören und die Tauben und Touristen am Markusplatz beobachten.

We also made a day trip to the island Murano and Burano. Burano is a cute little island full of really colourful houses and small alleys where you can find even more colourful clothes and icecream. We took the vaporetto to go to the islands.

Wir haben auch eine Tagesausflug auf die Inseln Murano und Burano unternommen. Burano ist eine entzückende kleine Insel voller bunter Häuser und kleiner Gassen in denen man bunte Kleidung und Eis kaufen kann. Wir sind mit dem Vaporetto zu den Inseln gefahren.

In Murano you can find glass manufacturers to visit and even a glass museum. Venice was renown for it´s delicate glassware. In the museum we saw old mirrors and glassware from the history of Venice.  Because I am into making jewelry, I enjoyed the displays of old glass beads and the demonstrations of how to make multicoloured beads.

In Murano kann man Glas-Manufakturen besichtigen und auch das Glas-Museum. Venedig war bekannt für seine exquisiten Glasarbeiten. Im Museum findet man alte Spiegel und feinste Glasarbeiten aus der Geschichte Venedigs. Am spannendsten fand ich die unterschiedlichen Glasperlen und die Herstellungsarten mehrfärbiger Perlen, da ich sehr an Schmuckproduktion interessiert bin.

Venice is just beautiful, with nice bridges and buildings on every corner. You can find a lot of interesting spots (and of course some shady ones ) to enjoy. I would highly recommend visiting Venice. I am definitely happy that I did – I enjoyed it.

Venedig ist einfach wunderschön, mit hübschen bracken und Gebäuden an jeder Ecke. Man kann viele interessante Stellen entdecken (und auch ein paar zwielichtige). Ich würde einen euch in Venedig jedem empfehlen. Ich bin sehr froh dort gewesen zu sein – es war unglaublich.
